Since 1984, the year of the publication of its first edition, the famous "Blue Guide" has been the international reference for paediatricians and neuropaediatricians with regard to epileptic syndromes in infants, children and adolescents.
This 6th edition reviews some of the most noteworthy developments in the field, particularly in epileptic syndromes, but also focuses on the genetic aspects of the syndromes and their development. Progress brought about by advances in neuroimaging is also discussed in addition to specific etiologies such as parasitic diseases and immune and autoimmune diseases.
The different backgrounds of the contributors - coordinators and authors - ensure that the book's longstanding reputation for objectivity and seriousness, built over almost 35 years, remain well-deserved.
This book written by the current leading specialists is recognized worldwide as the international reference in epilepsy. -
Paediatric Movement Disorders is a relatively new and exciting field of Child Neurology. The present book represents the outcome of an international symposium, organized as a forum for exchange between both adult and child neurologists. The contributions of highly qualified experts represent the "state of the art" of this rapidly expanding field. A source of thought for progress in further understanding, it will prove to be a useful tool to both clinicians and scientists.

The aim of this publication is to demonstrate the effect of the neural networks on cognitive functions and behavioural patterns during the development phase of a child.
Taking as a basis the previous publication in this series dedicated to brain lesion localization and development, this time it is by examining in particular the frontal lobe, limbic system (hippocampus and amygdala) and visuo-cognitive system that this book looks at the close links between the neural networks and the future development of visual, cognitive and functional capacities.
The section on the frontal lobe concentrates on anatomy, mirror neurons, memory, executive functions, the neuropsychology of frontal lobe epilepsy and the resolution of social problems which can occur as a result of brain damage.
The part on the limbic system looks at neuro-anatomical organisation and the core functions of the hippocampus and amygdala, problems of language, music, emotions or autism.
Finally, the section dedicated to the visuo-cognitive system summarises the visual field problems associated with focal lesions, the correlation with neuro-imagery and visual impairment in children born prematurely. -
Founded on 1 January 2000 and placed under the authority of the Ministry of Health, the French Blood Establishment (EPS) is the sole public provider of national blood transfusion services in France. ISO 9001: 2008 certified and formed by seventeen regional establishments, the EFS manages the activities of collection, preparation, testing and distribution of labile blood products. Its role in maintaining the country's self-sufficiency in labile blood products, whilst meeting the highest quality and safety standards, makes it a major contributor to public health in France.
Three major features set French transfusion medicine apart from other international models:
in France, blood donation is underpinned by four founding principles: it is anonymous, voluntary, non-remunerated and not-for-profit. "Ethical blood donation" is the foundation of the French model;
this model is led by a single government agency, the EFS, which has a monopoly over the distribution of labile blood products to ensure constant availability across the country;
delivery is inseparable from immunohaematology (the EFS is the largest medical testing laboratory in France) and transfusion support, which is also provided by the EFS, to guide the prescriber towards the "right prescription" (the right product for the right patient).
Through the EFS, the French State is therefore responsible for self-sufficiency, health safety and the efficient management of the rare and precious commodity that is human blood. The French model is one of the few to provide both "ethical blood donation" and internationally recognized efficiency. -

In 1997, Jean AICARDI, one of the most brilliant child neurologists of our era, commented on "How the view has changed" in the field of pediatric epilepsy surgery: "Surgery for epilepsy has now become a realistic therapeutic option for selected children and the field is likely to increase in the near future. It is now realised that procrastination, in the hope that new antiepileptic drugs will become efficacious, is not justified for some forms of epilepsy that can often be recognised from onset or after a relatively short course. It is also becoming clear that surgery is not reserved for a highly selected population of patients with normal intelligence and focal seizures, but may also help a proportion of more severe epilepsies if a realistic view of the problem and perspectives is taken by the partners".
Twenty years later, the most obvious and probably still the strongest reasons against epilepsy surgery in children are cultural and psychological. This book, written by members of the ad hoc ILAE Task Force for pediatric epilepsy surgery and experts in the field, is the result of continued collaborative working between pediatric epilepsy surgery centres over the years. Authors critically review all available data and set out the key elements of presurgical evaluation, the specific electro-clinical presentations per etiology, the range of outcomes to be monitored, and the surgical techniques used today.
What becomes obvious when reviewing all available data is that the key to optimized outcome in children with epilepsy is early appropriate recognition of possible surgical candidates and timely referral to centres with expertise. -

When epilepsy is diagnosed, it is important to try to control the seizures and the social consequences of the disease over several months both in childhood and later in life.
Although difficult to measure, these consequences can be assessed through a set of simple questions. First and foremost: What course of action to take? Should the focus be controlling the seizures, remission with or without anti-epileptic medication, quality of life or a combination of all of the above? Secondly, why try to predict outcomes and who will use this information? Thirdly, exactly how precise are these predictions?
Based on the conclusions of a workshop bringing together 49 international experts, the aim of this book is to take a critical look at our current knowledge of epilepsy outcomes in children and identify clinical and basic research pathways for the future. -

There has been growing interest in the use of cannabis-based products for the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including epilepsy. A number of studies were published during the last 5 years
demonstrating efficacy of purified CBD for the control of a large spectrum of seizure-types, particularly those observed in severe childhood epilepsies, such as Lennox- Gastaut and Dravet syndromes. This book, co-authored by leaders in the field of epileptology, critically reviews recent data from clinical trials. Authors discuss issues related to pharmacology, drug interactions, efficacy, potential adverse events and
long-term effects on development and behaviour. Child and adult neurologists and all clinicians contributing to epilepsy care will find useful information on the best practices, when using purified CBD for the treatment of
drug-resistant epilepsies.
